Day 4: Saint Francis’ Compassion

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” — Matthew 5:9 (NIV)

In our novena for recovery and renewal, we turn to the compassionate life of Saint Francis of Assisi, a beloved saint who alleviated the suffering of those on the margins of society. His example of caring for the least of these is a model of how service and compassion reduce the harm inflicted by stigma. His life was marked by a dedication to simplicity, humility, and a deep connection with all living beings.

Francis’s profound connection with all creation, from the smallest creatures to his neighbors, reflected his deeply held belief in the interconnectedness of all existence. Through his gentle demeanor and soothing words, he bridged the gap between humanity and creation, fostering a sense of harmony and reverence, and praise for the divine in every aspect of creation. His legacy continues to influence millions of followers and reminds us of the transformative power of love.

“Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.” — Saint Francis of Assisi

Prayer:

Dear Saint Francis, as we continue our novena, we seek your intercession. Your life embodies the spirit of compassion, selflessness, and solidarity with the marginalized. Just as you dedicated your life to caring for the poor, we ask for your guidance and strength to stand in solidarity with those affected by stigma and harm.

(Expand the prayer to seek Saint Francis’ intercession, asking for compassion to alleviate the suffering of others, reduce stigma, and find solace in simplicity and humility.)

God of boundless compassion, through Saint Francis of Assisi’s intercession, grants us the strength and heart to alleviate the suffering of those on the edge of our communities, reduce the harm inflicted by stigma, and find solace in simplicity and humility. As we navigate the early stages of recovery, empower us to be instruments of your peace, turning inward to find our true home.

May Saint Francis’ compassionate spirit inspire us as we journey towards recovery and a commitment to reducing harm in the lives of others. With humility, we seek your favor as we take these steps toward embracing compassion and solidarity.

Charge for Continued Action:

Reflect on Saint Francis of Assisi’s compassionate life and embrace his example as you continue your recovery journey. Seek opportunities to alleviate the suffering of others, reduce stigma, and find comfort in prayer and meditation.

Glory to the Creator,
Redeemer, and Sustainer,
As it was in the beginning,
Is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen.
