Don’t Look Back
NOW is weaving through you
Emily woke to full body aches, with no recognizable cause. She had a transmission to deliver later on, so she showered and dosed herself, and made ready as best she could.
Years of martial arts had taught her that a hot shower would relieve the worst of what she was feeling, and so it did. Still, she felt odd, like Alice through a looking glass.
“Go ask Alice,” she hummed to herself, as dizziness began to set in.
“At least I haven’t lost my sense of humor.”
The next morning was a non-starter in every sense of the word. This wasn’t just a cold, didn’t feel like flu, or maybe it did. She certainly did not feel like herself. She agreed with her housemate, “This is awful.” And so it began.
Emily woke from naps not knowing what day it was. After a few days, when the cold symptoms began to lessen, she figured all would be well, including herself. “I haven’t been that ill for ages,” she thought, wobbling down the hall and stairs to the kitchen. “Maybe today I can reschedule some things.”
The next morning, Emily tried to get out of bed and was unsuccessful in pushing herself to a sitting position. What the? “Weak. I’m so weak!” Emily whispered, knowing there was no one to hear.
