TL;DR: As part of involving ourselves better with our community we’re creating the role Community Manager, and Arne Hassel will step in to do this job. In this post he describes why, what, and how the role will function.

Diwala is a digital economy platform that aims to solve a vital problem that refugees struggle with today: documenting their knowledge and skills. This is a goal that has been very well received by many, and we have been getting a lot of feedback and goodwill.

We are very happy for all of the interest, but at times we can become a bit overwhelmed. Creating a company requires dealing with a ton of things, and it can be hard to manage it all. We recognize the potential of a living community, and believe it can be a great asset in our work to help the refugees and their communities.

As such, we want to establish a new role in Diwala: The Community Manager (CM). The overall goal for CM is:

  • To nurture the community around Diwala,
  • To create guidelines to facilitate clear expectations for all, and
  • To communicate news and stories related to Diwala.

We have already been doing some of this as part of our social media outreach (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram). This will continue as normal, but the CM will also be active in contributing to this. In addition, there will be some practical additions:

  • A bi-weekly post on Medium; there won’t be a strict form on this, but will mostly consist of news and updates.
  • Curating our soon to come newsletter, which will simply be another platform for the posts we publish on Medium and other updates that did not make it in to medium.
  • A more active outreach on Slack; this includes getting to know those that have joined, and map what kind of knowledge and network is amazing.

To do the work of the Community Manager we have Arne Hassel who has volunteered. Arne has been part of Diwala since the very beginning when the team initially met as part of the UN Women and Katapult hackathon. He will also contribute as a front-end developer working on the websites and apps of Diwala, and helping with the economics of Diwala.

Arne Hassel takes on the role as community manager in Diwala.

Arne has a bachelor in Economics and a masters in Computer Studies, and works as a senior front-end developer in Bouvet. While he haven’t had the possibility to join Diwala full-time, he hopes to become a more active contributor through the role of CM.

There is a ton of work to be done as part of fulfilling the Diwala goals, and we hope to have you follow as our stories grow and multiply, and maybe even join parts of it. If you have questions to any of this, or Diwala in general, don’t hesitate to contact. We are available on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Slack; you can comment or respond to our posts on Medium; you can also contact Arne directly on arne.hassel@diwala.org or on his twitter @megoth.
