Idea: Automatically show related videos under a video if you watch long enough such as 10 seconds and tapping automatically opens to the Related videos list (#65)

Purpose is to present “Related” videos based on what the user may want to see without requiring that the user goes to the Related page, while showing a preview that can be seen easily enough without requiring too much space in case the person doesn’t want to view any of the Related videos and instead continue scrolling.

Start on Subscriptions, swipe for next video, watch video for some time such as 10 seconds then Related videos automatically load, then tap “Related Title 2” which opens the overlay showing Related videos autoplaying, and close Related to return to where you were. Then you can continue scrolling to view autoplaying videos in your Subscriptions. Designed by D.J. Sherrets.

YouTube today:

  • Tapping to watch a video on mobile shows the video playing at the top with the ability to scroll while the video plays to see Related videos.
  • Facebook presents related links or videos after someone visits a link then taps back to view the feed.

Proposed idea:

  1. Start on a list of videos, such as from Subscriptions or from Search results or a Playlist or something else such as a Related list. In this case, it’s Subscriptions.
  2. Watch a video and note that after 10 seconds, a Related videos appear under that video in the feed and the videos do not play automatically. Tap on the link for “Video 2” which opens an overlay including the 3 Related videos appearing in order.
  3. Note that the Related videos automatically animates to showing “Related Title 2” automatically.
  4. Swipe down if you want to watch Related Title 1.
  5. Tap “X” to close to return to the Subscriptions video list where Video Title 2 resumes autoplaying.

Comments:

  • Opportunity is to present Related videos as part of trying to focus on one feed that auto-plays videos.
  • Related videos are shown as suggestions with the click and animation helping show the user where the related videos are located.
  • Note that tapping the “Related” link would open the same overlay starting with “Related Title 1.”
  • About 10 seconds into a video playing, automatically load a new related video or two related videos under that, and so that way the next video that autoplays is a related video. Perhaps 10 seconds is long enough to show considerable enough interest to want to see Related videos.
  • The % of video watched that causes the related videos to appear can be based on how much of the video people tend to watch and/or how much of videos that person watching tends to watch. Reason is to try to help the person watching see more videos they may want to watch.
  • The user can swipe left on a given video to open “Related” videos, or of course can tap on “Related” under the relevant video.
