Idea: Overlay of new Chats & Stories on Camera for quick viewing with one-tap to make photo/video (#37)

Purpose is to simplify by only having one screen to view Chats and Stories, and make as easy to view Chats or Stories as it is to make a photo or video.

Start on Camera view, tap to make a photo, tap “X” to return to Camera view, tap “Person 4” to view Story, swipe down to close to Stories view, swipe back to Camera view, tap on “Person 1” to view Chat, swipe down to Chat view, then swipe to return to Camera view. Designed by D.J. Sherrets.

Snapchat today:

  • The Camera view appears when opening the app.
  • A strength of Snapchat is the focus on the Camera when loading the app.

Proposed idea:

  1. Start on Camera view. Note there’s an overlay that shows unread Chats and unseen Stories. Tap on the Camera button to take a photo.
  2. Tap “X” to return to the Camera. Note that the overlay is still there. If you tap on any of the Camera buttons on the bottom or on the camera on the bottom where there isn’t the low opacity overlay, then the overlay will disappear so the user can focus on viewing what’s on the Camera.
  3. Tap on “Person 4” which opens Person 4’s Story.
  4. Swipe down to close which takes you to the Stories view. Swipe to return to Camera which shows the Chat preview still because the user hasn’t yet visited Chat. Tap on “Person 1” to view Person 1’s chat.

Comments:

  • Only shows a certain number of Chats such as prioritized for people you know well and that you haven’t seen before. Then below that prioritizes Stories that you haven’t seen before but you tend to enjoy watching.
  • Any tap on the camera options on the bottom causes the Chats and Stories to go away.
  • Long-press on Camera button records video as works in the app today.
  • I removed animation in part because I assume that animation may not be permitted anyway in order to focus on fast loading.
  • Preserves ability to swipe to left screen to view Chat, and swipe to right screen to view Stories.
  • Note the animation when the camera appears fully that indicates that the Chats go to the left and the Stories go to the right to indicate which side they can be accessed.
  • Alternatively, actually do combine Chat with Stories in only one list, and have buttons to jump to end of new Chats if necessary.
Start on Camera view, tap in the open area to the right of the Camera button to cause the overlay to disappear, tap to make a photo, tap “X” to return to Camera view which then loads the overlay again, then long-press to record a video and let go when done recording. Designed by D.J. Sherrets.
Camera view has an overlay, tap the Camera button to make a photo, tap “X” to return to Camera view, tap “Person 4” to view Story…
…swipe down to go to Stories view, swipe back to Camera view that only shows Chat list because already visited Stories, tap on “Person 1”…
…swipe down to go to Chat view, then swipe back to Camera view. Designed by D.J. Sherrets.
