Idea: Live stream on Snapchat and tap button to create divider(s) so playback version has multiple videos that are easy to one-tap to advance through, so the creator can be clear about when topics / locations / action / etc change in case the viewer may watch that 4.21.2016 (#125)

Purpose is to enable live video that could be 3 minutes, 10 minutes, 20 minutes or however long while still enabling the person doing the live stream to create dividing points between what’s discussing in case viewers want to skip to the next part. Opportunity is to make making a divider easy for the creator so the divider can be made naturally in the process of making the live video so that no need to review later.

Press release:

Title: Share Live & Watch Simply

Introduction: The ease of one-tap to advance to something new in Snapchat Stories now comes to Live video. Share Live on Snapchat and just tap once to create a divider so a viewer taps to skip to the next divider, such as when a topic changes.

Snapchat & live video today:

  • There is no ability to share live video on Snapchat today.
  • Snapchat videos are currently maximum of 10 seconds and posting requires at least one tap to share to Story and one swipe to return to camera to be able to make another video.
  • Facebook Live lets you tap to make a status then tap the Facebook Live button then tap to go live, which then shares your video recording to whoever is watching from feed as well as sends notifications to people who have tapped to subscribe.
  • Opportunity for Live video is that videos made can be multiple minutes or even 10 minutes or 20 minutes or longer as part of providing reason for people to watch live in time, rather than having a live broadcast that is only available somewhat briefly.
  • Challenge with Live video is that multiple minute or longer videos may be longer than someone wants to watch a video that is replaying.
  • Challenge with Live video is that the video may start somewhat slowly as the broadcaster waits for more people to arrive to watch live. So watching the replay may be particularly uninteresting in the first minute or so when the person may also be especially likely to abandon watching the video.

Proposed idea:

  1. Start on the Camera view, then swipe up to go to Live Video view.
  2. Tap on the camera button that says “LIVE” in the middle to start recording live. Note that the “# viewers” appears in the lower left to show how many people are watching. Alternatively, after this tap, prompt the user to type a title for the broadcast which could be used to share in case of sending notifications to people who want to know about the person sharing live.
  3. Note that there is a button for “Divider” that starts with “1” meaning there is a total of 1 video so far. Tap the Divider button to create a divider and change the number to “2” which means that as soon as you press the button, then another video will start at that point to help with how people watch the video later during playback.
  4. Note that “CHAT” on the bottom has a number next to that to indicate the number of new chats. If more than 9 chats, then can say “>9” so not constantly updating the number. Swipe up to open chat to see that there is one private chat you have received from Person 1. Note that a chat from Person 2 is delivered to you.
  5. Tap again on Divider to make 3 total videos.
  6. Note there is a link to “Turn off Chat” which means that you won’t be notified about private chats during the live stream and that people watching won’t be able to send a private chat during the live stream. Tap “Turn off Chat” and see that the chats sent are not visible.
  7. Swipe down to close chat. Note that “Chat” doesn’t have a number next to it anymore because there are no chats permitted to be sent.
  8. Tap the Divider again to make 4 total videos.
  9. Tap the Live button to end recording which opens the Stories view and shows your Story and loads the 4 videos that were created from the live recording. Note that each live video has the annotation “Recorded live” to be clear about that.

Comments:

  • Opportunity is to help make live video easier to watch by using dividers to indicate where videos end.
  • Enables people to view each video separately.
  • The number on the “Divider” button when in live mode starts at 1 because there is only 1 total videos made, then tapping “Divider” changes to “2” to indicate that a divider has been added and so the total number of videos is now 2.
  • Since the Divider button was at 4, then there are 4 different videos that were made.
  • A divider is automatically created for every 2 minutes of video if there has not already been a divider created.
  • Alternatively, automatically created dividers are made after more time such as 5 minutes.
  • Alternatively, no dividers are created automatically.
  • Alternatively, whether dividers are made automatically is available to change or turn off in settings.
