Idea: Lock screen video notifications autoplay videos, tap to expand video & turn on audio, & buttons to respond on lock screen including comment/share/etc such as for YouTube, Facebook and any app (#68)

Purpose is to enable to watch videos that are posting live to help decide whether to watch, watch videos from people you subscribe to, and reduce the number of steps needed to interact with media.

Start on lock screen, get a notification about a live video, tap on the live video, tap to like the video then add a comment, tap on the YouTube video to play that audio with video, then move your phone to landscape mode to watch the full video. Designed by D.J. Sherrets.

Notifications today:

  • Sometimes notifications do not include media.
  • On iOS, notifications from iMessage do include media but seeing the media requires opening the app.
  • Of course this shows iOS notifications and unlock feature.

Proposed idea:

  1. Start on the lock screen and see that there are notifications about videos from someone you subscribe to on YouTube and another person you subscribe to on Instagram. Note that all videos are autoplaying with no audio.
  2. Now see that a new notification appears from Facebook about a live video that’s available and the video is autoplaying. Tap on the Facebook live video, then the video expands and audio turns on, and the other two videos stop playing.
  3. Tap on “Like” to like the Facebook live video.
  4. Tap on “Comment” to add a comment.
  5. Write the comment then tap “Post.” Note that it says “Posting…” then “Posted! :)” when done posting.
  6. Tap on the YouTube video which expands the video and turns on the audio, and also stops playing the Facebook live video.
  7. Move phone to landscape mode and see that the video switches to landscape size viewing.

Comments:

  • Opportunity in general is to make notifications easier to access information and become a place where content is consumed.
  • Related is that notifications will need to include some idea of priority such as one-to-one messages to you that can still be seen above media notifications, particularly because with interactive media notifications then people may choose to subscribe to a lot more media notifications such that notifications on the lock screen could become an increasingly important feed of content.
  • Opportunity is to significantly increase how much video people can watch.
  • This reduces the steps needed to interact with media.
  • Note that landscape mode while using the lock screen is enabled as well so you can watch a video without unlocking the phone.
  • Alternatively, submitting the comment or like or share could require unlocking the phone based on what settings the user has decided.
