Idea: One-tap access to Chat/Camera/Stories & keep swipe to switch Chat to Camera to Stories (#50)

Purpose is to make clear what Chat/Stories/Camera/etc are by including text saying what each button is, and making the screens available with one tap.

Start on Camera view, swipe to Stories, swipe to Chat, swipe up to page the list of people sending Chats, tap Stories, tap Chat, tap Camera, make a photo, close the photo, swipe to Chat, then tap to view Person 3’s Chat photo. Designed by D.J. Sherrets.

Snapchat today:

  • App opens to Camera view. A number appears for each of Chat and Stories to indicate what’s new, but there’s no text saying what each number represents.
  • When on the Chat view, there’s no quick way to get to Stories with one tap.
  • In general, users are confused about how Snapchat works and there’s a need for getting around the app to be clearer.

Proposed idea:

  1. App opens to Camera view. Swipe to Stories view.
  2. Swipe twice to Chat view.
  3. Swipe up to page up the list of people on Chat view. Purpose of paging is to be faster than scrolling to see exactly what’s there.
  4. Tap on the Stories button to go directly to Stories.
  5. Tap on Chat to go directly to Chat.
  6. Tap on the Camera button to go to the Camera.
  7. Tap on the Camera circle button to make a photo.
  8. Tap the “X” to close the photo and return to the Camera.
  9. Swipe to go to Chat.
  10. Tap on Person 3 to view the unread Chat photo.

Comments:

  • Opportunity is to improve the understanding of user’s of the Snapchat product while still keeping the swipes that are used to quickly get from different screens.
  • Alternatively, keep Snapchat as it works today but use text under the “Chat” and “Stories” buttons on the Camera view to say “Chat” and “Stories” to be clear about what those buttons do.
