Idea: Read receipt if someone taps to view a link, watched a video or read an article that you sent in Messenger (#58)

Purpose is to provide a read receipt for other content provided other than seeing the message.

Start on messages, tap to view text with video link from Person 1, note that there’s a read receipt for you viewing that message, then tap the video to load and watch the full video, then tap “Close” when done and note the read receipt changed to indicate that you watched the full video. Messaging products today:

  • Read receipts are common based on visiting the conversation thread with a particular person.
  • Snapchat tells you when someone in particular has viewed a photo or video sent. But there’s no indication of how much is viewed.

Proposed idea:

  1. Start in messages main screen. Open the message thread where there’s a new message from Person 1. Note that there is a read receipt about you viewing the message.
  2. See that there is a link to a video. Tap the link. Watch the full video.
  3. Then tap “Close.” See that a read receipt appeared about you watching the full video, and there’s an indication of how much of the video was watched.

Comments:

  • Opportunity is to provide some clarity about when people visit links that are shared.
  • Provide read receipts for if the link is fully viewed such as scrolled to the bottom, how much time is spent on the page/website, and in the case of a video then how much of the video is watched.
  • Reading article receipt: “(Person 1) scrolled through 75% of the article in 5 minutes.”
  • Watching video receipt: “(Person 1) watched 60% of the video in 2 minutes 15 seconds.”
  • Tapping a link receipt: “(Person 1) tapped on the link and tapped back to the message after 15 seconds.”
  • This could alternatively require user opt-in to decide to do. Benefit could be clarity about whether the recipient did the action asked, such as in the context of working and collaborating on research / projects / etc.
