Idea: Show captions automatically on Snapchat videos when person watching has audio off & if accuracy of captions for voice/music/noise 4.30.2016 (#136)

Purpose is to enable people who have audio off to be able to learn about what’s being said so that turning on audio won’t be necessary, so that they can discover more context of what is happening which may inspire watching the full video or more Stories, and to perhaps give reason to the person watching to turn on audio.

Start on Stories view, tap to view a friend’s Story which starts with a video and note that the captions appear at the bottom of the screen and update depending on the part of the video where audio is said. The video finishes and a photo is the next Story which doesn’t have a caption in this case. Designed by D.J. Sherrets.

Press release:

  • Title: Captions in Snapchat Stories
  • Introduction: Enjoy watching without audio on? View captions at the bottom of Snapchat Stories automatically when audio can be determined. So you can know what’s happening, and even if you may want to turn on the audio.

Snapchat & captions today:

  • It appears that many people who watch Snapchat Stories do not have audio turned on.
  • Sometimes people appear to tap through Snapchat Stories quite quickly, and so I wonder if they may watch longer if the audio was available.
  • Facebook advertising includes captions and found that captions include watch time by 12%. https://www.facebook.com/business/news/updated-features-for-video-ads

Proposed idea:

  1. Start on Stories. Tap to view a friend’s Story. Note that captions appear on the bottom of the Story to show the text of what is being said as the video is playing.
  2. Then after the first video played, the friend’s next Story appeared which is a photo that doesn’t need captions.
  3. Note that the captions span three different screens. A reason is to separate the captions based on what part of the video is playing.

Comments:

  • Opportunity is to help give clarity about what is being said in Stories.
  • Opportunity is to provide more reason for people to talk in their Stories because the talking can be converted into captions that can be read.
  • Opportunity is to significantly increase the amount of video with audio sharing because there is an opportunity to interact with what is being said in addition to what is visual.
  • If background noise can be determined such as wind or cars, or if a particular song is heard, then note that in the caption.
