Idea: Snapchat enabled with Chromecast to share to TV, only shows when a photo/video is loaded in the app, continues Stories auto-play when you navigate elsewhere on your phone, & optionally plays audio of the text put on the photos/videos 4.28.2016 (#133)

Purpose is to enable people to watch Stories on auto play while looking at the TV and/or using their phone for something else if wanted.

Start on Stories, tap to connect Chromecast which shows that the TV has connected to Stories, then tap to view a Story which shows on the TV, then swipe to next and swipe to another Story, then swipe down to close back to Stories. Then scroll to tap on another friend’s Story. Designed by D.J. Sherrets.

Press release:

  • Title: Watch Snapchat on your TV
  • Introduction: With Chromecast, you can play your Stories on your TV so you can watch by yourself or with friends. Or even use your phone as the Stories continue to auto play.

Snapchat & Chromecast today:

  • Snapchat added auto-play in March: (link to announcement). I had written about this idea for auto-play in a design on January 7: (link to my post).
  • Auto-play on Snapchat Stories is useful so you can keep watching Stories without needing to tap on a different person each time.
  • Chromecast provides ability to integrate so that a Chromecast or equivalent button can appear such as on the top bar of an app to indicate the ability to share to TV. For example, YouTube and Netflix can be used from your phone to your TV with Chromecast.

Proposed idea:

  1. Start on Stories view. When you have the ability to share the app to your TV screen or another screen, then note that the “Cast” button appears.
  2. Tap on the Cast button to connect to your TV. Note that the cast button changed to “On” to indicate that connected to TV, and that the TV says to tap on a Story to open to play on your TV.
  3. Swipe on your phone to the next person’s Story, then swipe to the next person’s Story. Note that the movement of the Story also appears the same on the TV.
  4. Swipe down to go back to the Stories view and note that the TV returns to the text that appears when connected to the TV.
  5. Scroll to another friend and tap to view Story. Note that you could then leave the app and select another app, and the Story would continue to auto play on the TV.

Comments:

  • Opportunity is to enable people to watch Stories on TV.
  • A reason to watch Stories on TV is to share with multiple people.
  • Turning on Chromecast and then opening a Story then tapping on your phone home button and/or changing to another app continues to play Stories on your TV. This playing continues until you visit the Stories app and tap to turn off the Chromecast link to the TV.
  • Sharing Storing on TV enables you to use your phone for something else while the Stories play.
  • Automatically reading the text on a photo and video by default is helpful particularly for people who may look around to something else while auto playing.
  • Read the name of the person when the Story changes to the next person. This helps if not looking at your phone.
  • Alternatively, when in casting mode and a Story is selected, keep on Stories list and instead show a button to skip to person’s next Story or skip to next person’s Story. And add a button on each person in the Story list for “Add to playlist” so you can tap to add people you want, and then arrange in what order you want to watch.
