Idea: When tap to search on YouTube, for each recent search also show how many new and suggested results since you last visited 4.5.2016 (#102)

Purpose is to help people discover new content that might be useful to check out. Focus is on content that is determined to be particularly relevant such as in the top 10 search results.Include thumbnails for content that has photos/videos if relevant.

YouTube search today:

  • Tapping in the search bar on Google.com or Chrome shows a list of recent searches.
  • Facebook indicates in search results if someone you had searched for has new posts that you haven’t seen.
  • YouTube already has suggestions about videos to view based on videos you recently viewed.

Proposed idea:

  1. Start on the search box, and tap in the search box that shows your recent searches. Note that a new result is indicated for each with some explanation of what, as well as thumbnails showing updates such as particular videos.

Comments:

  • Opportunity is to indicate how many results that are considered to be relevant that are new, as well as results that are simply new.
  • Opportunity to indicate how many results are new is to encourage people to check out new content.
  • Here are the different annotations available: “# new uploads by profiles watched after search,” the same as before but “relevant” in “# new relevant uploads by profiles watched after search,” “# relevant videos you haven’t viewed yet,” “# new relevant uploads,” “# trending uploads” as indicated by videos that are attracting more views lately, and for specific profiles there’s “New: # uploads • # likes.”
  • For accounts you searched for and watched a video, then indicate if that account has any new posts since you last viewed.
  • For a given search, indicate how many new video uploads there are by the accounts that the person had viewed videos after doing a particular search.
  • In general, opportunity is to try multiple things to see what people may find interesting/useful and adapt.
  • The purple square shows a thumbnail of videos that are suggested.
  • Note that for some results use a height that is double to show something that has at least 5 thumbnails suggested to show more possible videos to view.
  • Default thumbnail is showing the highest ranked video that you haven’t viewed in search results and haven’t viewed the video.
  • Note that the search “search term here that is specific” is given as an example of a search where no more search results are suggested.
  • Suggestions are based on videos that someone may want to view including based on video view history that may suggest the person may continue to want to view more about the topic.
  • Use the space on the right side of showing recent searches to show more thumbnails if relevant and available.
  • Consider expanding the vertical space of the search bar so the thumbnails so each dimension is about 30% more.
  • A reason to not do this is that this could make looking at recent searches confusing or have too much information.
  • Focus is on showing updates to accounts you have visited because that is clearly something that the person intended to do and is useful to show, particularly if the person follows that account.
  • Beyond that there are opportunities to try to suggest viewing more subtly.
