Ideas: Side bar on feed to drag finger slowly to quickly move through feed to figure which posts to look at more closely for Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter (#75)

Purpose is to be able to scroll faster by pressing finger down while scrolling on that line. Scrolling is fixed to be about 15 times faster scrolling so moving a full vertical screen for every 1/15th of the vertical space of the screen. Opportunity is to enable people to navigate quickly and minimize amount of gesture needed while maintaining control over how much content appears so the eyes can be focused on exactly where makes sense on the screen to determine what content to focus more time.

Press and drag your finger on the right side bar to navigate quickly to another part of the feed. Dragging from the top to the bottom of the bar shows about 15 posts. Designed by D.J. Sherrets.

Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat & feeds today:

  • Snapchat has a right side bar that you can press and drag your finger to get to a particular part of a feed.
  • Facebook and Instagram use scrolling that appears to be the same as the default of iOS for one swipe up moves you down the feed.
  • Sometimes people use multiple quick swipes on Facebook and Instagram to quickly get an idea of what’s in the feed and see what makes to stop to look at. There’s an opportunity to reduce those multiple swipes to a slow finger drag down the right hand bar.
  • Snapchat has one-tap to advance to the next Story.

Proposed idea:

  1. Start on the feed. Press and drag your finger slowly from the top all the way to the bottom of the bar. Note that shows about 15 different media posts.
  2. Then press your finger in another part such as the middle of the bar and move your finger up slowly a bit of the ways and note that this move you back up the feed.
  3. Then press somewhere else and move your finger slowly. Note that this moves the feed. Keep trying multiple places to drag on the bar to move. Note you can press and drag anywhere on the right bar to change where you are, so no need to look at where exactly your finger is dragging to navigate.

Comments:

  • Opportunity is to enable much faster scrolling through the feed.
  • Opportunity is to enable people to focus on viewing content, and to reduce the need to think about what gesture to make to navigate through content.
  • Alternatively, allows for scrolling at rates that aren’t 15x faster so perhaps 5x faster.
  • Side bar can be scrolled from any place and go up or down from wherever the person currently is on the screen.
  • Opportunity is to be able to scroll on this bar at any time without necessarily needing to look at the bar to scroll.
  • Difference from idea #74 is that this bar can be scrolled from any part of the bar. So there’s no need to press a particular part of the bar to get to a particular place. This is also an advantage to the implementation by Snapchat.
  • Alternatively, side bar could have a selector that would be needed to be scrolled from a precise location, but I think better to scroll from any gesture point so that way looking at the side gesture area is not required to navigate.
  • Otherwise you can still do normal scrolling by swiping up or down anywhere on the posts.
This shows the finger dragging from the top of the bar to a bit lower on the bar which already navigates to the 5th post in the feed…
…and then lower on the bar which shows the 12th post in the feed, and then near the bottom of the bar which shows the 15th post in the feed. Designed by D.J. Sherrets.
