Show blue dot with text “Viewing now” on Snapchat’s Chat view for ease of seeing who is available to interact with 4.4.2016 (#101)

Purpose is to make seeing who is viewing now faster and easier by showing that info on Chat view rather than requiring that you are inside of Chat view to see that indicator.

Note that “Viewing now :)” with a blue dot appears when you are looking at Chat view and Person 1 is in the person-to-person Chat view of what you sent to Person 1 or Person 1 is viewing a photo/video/something that you sent to Person 1. Designed by D.J. Sherrets.

Snapchat today:

• Snapchat Chat 2.0 shows a small circle to indicate when someone is also inside the person-to-person chat view. Challenge though is that you would have to actually be inside of the person-to-person chat view which requires going to chat view then swiping right on that person’s name. A problem with this is that you may not want to spend the time inside of the chat view to see when your friend is viewing then.

Proposed idea:

1. Note that Person 1 is “Viewing now :)” as indicated by that text appearing and a small blue dot appearing in the corner of where the person’s profile photo appears. Alternatively, the profile photos on the left side could instead represent the icons that are used to show whether you have received a photo or video and whether you have sent or received.

Comments:

• Opportunity for showing the indicator of person viewing now is that you can know whether you should enter a chat conversation.
• This could encourage more live interaction by seeing which friends in your list are currently viewing your content.
• Note that Snapchat already says when exactly someone viewed what you posted, so you could notice that already as well. Purpose of this though is to focus on the live nature of the viewing/interaction.
• A reason to not do this could be that visiting the chat view is partly about viewing new audio/video/photo posts sent, whereas this approach enables you to send audio/video without going into the chat view.
• Note in the last part that there is a small blue dot that indicates when someone is currently viewing something that you sent to that person, whether that person is viewing inside the person-to-person chat view or viewing in full screen such as if tapped to view a photo or video.
• Alternatively, viewing now also includes people who are viewing your Stories, in addition to people currently viewing now your Chats.
