I have been to so many Bass shows over the years and I always see these girls up on stage just killin’ it! I finally found out who they were while I was shooting a video for Excision out in Calgary. La Gogue is the the sexiest and baddest female dance crew out of Canada! They have been featured in a number of our videos including Skrillex, Excision, and Porter Robinson. I managed to sit down with Stephanie one of the founders of the group for a quick Chat at Shambhala Music Festival this past summer.

How long have you been dancing?

I have been dancing since I was 4 years old. I started with ballet, then quickly joined performance arts at the age of 10. From there I immersed myself in jazz, hip-hop and lyrical. I started free style performance around 4 years ago, and in late 2009, Myself, Stacey Ann, and Tamara Lee all found ourselves wondering what happened to the skill and passion in Go-Go dance. We wanted to bring back an industry standard for dance that we felt like as of late, was lost and on a steady decline. La Gogue is an ancient French word meaning “Joy, happiness”, it is also the root word for à gogo, meaning “in abundance, galore” As a company, we wanted our employers, and the audience to experience this. We definitely feel that we have achieved this. We have even been told that we have taken Go-Go to a new level, one where some people feel that we should just make up a new word for the amazing talented work our dancers do.

What is la gogue all about?

La Gogue is a family of performers that have been sharing their love of dance for years. We are visual artists with an abundance of passion and talent, and strive to personalize your events with our vision. May it be unique costumes, colors, props, body paint, or spinning fire, we can provide what you need.

La Gogue offers a variety of different acts such as: Go-Go Dancers, Break Dancer’s, Fire Spinners, Hula Hoopers and many more. The company wants nothing more than to share their love and energy at every opportunity. This common goal creates a unique and strong bond among the performers. It is more than a company, it is a family united by their love and passion of the arts. Our performer’s are friendly, joyful, playful and fun- No doubt they will melt your heart.

How many members?

We have 16 members. 14 female free style dancers, 1 male prop artist, 1 male break dancer, and a female fire spinner. Many of our regular dancers also are prop artists, we have 4 hoopers, two flags and poi, and an acro pole artist. Many of our other dancers are in the process of learning. That’s the great thing about dance and performance, there is always more to learn and more skills to achieve.

Who is your favourite DJ or artist?

I am all over the board when it comes to music. I certainly cannot say I have just one. Top of my list though are A-skillz, Paul Oakenfold, Pete Tong, Daft Punk, Pretty Lights, Imogen heap, Rammstein, Norah Jones, and Dispatch.

Fave festival?

Our favorite festival we have performed at to date would definitely be Shambhala music festival. Being a part of that production is a huge honor and blessing, as well as being able to see all the work that everyone puts into it behind the scenes. I know a number of people have felt that the festival has changed over the years, but the one thing that hasn’t changed I can assure you of is the heart and soul that all the workers of the festival put in both day and night to make it happen. To be a part of something so beautiful and full of compassion to pour our own love into for everyone else to see, is our pride and joy.
