the relationship i am looking for,
on this midnight in september,
is one where we keep our ways of communicating
but also speak directly
about the things that are important to us.

where we discuss the things
that will make a relationship good for both of us,
and the things that will make it healthy.

things like…

how we communicate with one another,
how we support one another in difficult times,
how we give each other space if someone needs it,
how we talk about issues and resolve conflicts,
how we navigate differences between us,
how we avoid one another’s triggers,
how much time we want to spend together,
what things we want to do separate,
who we look to for advice.

and then…
checking in on how the relationship is going
so it stays good and healthy.

i’m not looking for a perfect relationship
or on the other end, something volatile between us,
but something where we are both trying,
taking our time when needed,
learning and making adjustments as we go,
and doing our best to make one another happy.

that is the relationship i am looking for with you,
and i am willing to give time and to work for it.

what happened in june and july
was a powerful connection
but is not representative of how we can be.
