Last Season 85 of the UAAP was definitely an uphill battle for everyone but even then, the De La Salle University (DLSU) Kyorugi Team Lady Jins bagged the bronze in their pockets. This time around, for Season 86, the team looks to snatch the championship title.

In an interview with Team Captain, Argie Lamasan, she took us through their journey of what it was like training online to losing sight of the end goal and eventually regaining confidence.

Lamasan shares how the team is on the edge of their nerves in preparation for this season. According to her, it’s a lot different now than before, but in a good way. From doing online speed and stamina training to having to compete in an online speed-kicking competition, and then losing consistency along the way, the captain shares that the team is headstrong and far more focused now than ever.

The Lady Jins now focuses on stamina maintenance, techniques, application, and repetition — some of which, they couldn’t fully comply with due to restrictions. One thing the captain emphasizes as well is the importance of confidence.

In her experience as a rookie, Lamasan shares that it was quite challenging to keep up as most of the team at the time were seniors. But she’s also proud to say that now’s a different time for the Lady Jins. Aside from her reacquired confidence and belief in herself, the team’s overall morale of the team is in good condition.

Lamasan states that the coaches and the seniors worked to mold the team’s relationship, as they are comprised mostly of rookies. They find this a notable change as their bond as a team heavily contributes to everyone’s performance, even if Taekwondo is an individual sport. To build the bond, the Lady Jins do almost everything together — eat, sleep, and never forget to go to church together.

When asked about her overall thoughts and feelings for the team, Lamasan admits that there is still room for improvement. They take it to heart that they should push themselves to be their best versions, that even if each one is good, they can still be better. This notion stems from her own regrets last season, wherein she almost gave up and lost her will at some point.

But the captain has learned from then and now wills to boost herself and the team further, “mas ramdam ko ngayon yung gigil manalo”. Their coaches share the same sentiment as they often remind the team: “Okay lang matalo sa gitna, pero dapat alam n’yo sa sarili n’yo na binigay n’yo na lahat para ‘di kayo manghinayang.”

The Lady Jins currently have three coaches designated for varying aspects of their training — strength, stamina, and support. These coaches have given them their all and shown unconditional support to the team, for which they are very thankful. They are one of the many sources of the Lady Jins’ motivation to keep going forward, and why captain Argie reminds everyone to watch out for their team.

With conviction, Lamasan ends with “kailangan nila kaming abangan,” because the DLSU Lady Jins aim to notch the Gold this season!
