The De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Woodpushers bagged the 1st Runner-Up trophy in the recently concluded UAAP Season 84 Chess Tournament — Women’s Division on Wednesday, June 15, at the FEU Engineering Building Auditorium.

Sweeping their Final Four rounds against Adamson, 4–0, Ateneo, 2.5–1.5, and eventual champion NU, 2.5–1.5, in two game days, the Lady Woodpushers accumulated a total of 21 points to create enough distance ahead of 2nd Runner-Up awardees Adamson (18.5 points).

JUNE 12: FINAL FOUR ROUNDS 1 AND 2 (6.5 points)

The quartet of Taryn Graziel Espiritu (1 point), Samantha Glo Revita (1 point), Francois Marie Magpily (1 point), and Sara Francine Olendo (1 point) each triumphed over their respective matches against Adamson’ Samarita, Ornido, De Jesus, and Magro. On the same day, Olendo (1 point) stood out with the lone victory in DLSU’s matches against Ateneo’s Flores. Espiritu (0.5 point), Revita (0.5 point), and Magpily (0.5 point) each figured in ties with their respective opponents Osena, Tatoy, and Nadera. These results were enough to give them 6.5 points for the day.

JUNE 15: FINAL FOUR ROUND 3 (9 points, +2.5)

The Green and White got back at NU to cap off the tournament. Revita (1 point) and Olendo (1 point) nailed their respective matches against NU’s Doroy and Docena, while Magpily (0.5 point) and her opponent Mordido ended up in a tie. However, the extra 2.5 points were no longer enough for the Taft-based squad to overtake the Recto-based squad as NU, who finished with 26.5 points, had already virtually taken the gold at the end of the elimination round.

Magpily clinched Board 3 gold while Olendo also snagged Board 4 silver at the end of the tournament.

Before the Final Four rounds, the Lady Woodpushers participated in a single round robin elimination, where they recorded a win-tie-loss slate of 3–0–3 and earned 12 points, only half a point against Adamson (11.5 points) and behind the already distant 19 points of NU.

JUNE 1 and 5: ELIMINATION ROUNDS 1 TO 4 (6.5 points)

They kicked off their UAAP Season 84 campaign with back-to-back wins against Adamson on June 1 and Ateneo on June 5 before losing to NU for a 2–0–1 record and 6.5 points on June 5. Magpily led with 3 points after winning all her assignments against Adamson’s Samarita, Ateneo’s Tatoy, and NU’s Mordido. Olendo chipped in 1.5 points off a win versus Adamson’s Patria and a tie with Ateneo’s Nadera. Revita and Espiritu chipped in 1 point apiece from respective ties with Adamson’s De Jesus and Ateneo’s Mebrere.

JUNE 8: ELIMINATION ROUNDS 5 AND 6 (10.5 points, +4)

La Salle bowed down to FEU, 1.5–2.5, in Round 5, and then bounced back against UST, 2.5–1.5, in Round 6. Olendo swept her matches against FEU’s Nepascua and UST’s Lumacad to lead La Salle with 2 points, while Magpily added 1 point off two knots with FEU’s Tejada and UST’s Lagrio. Espiritu and Revita both lost to FEU before earning their combined 1 point anew off wins against UST’s Anana and Fajardo, respectively.

JUNE 10: ELIMINATION ROUNDS 7 (12 points, +1.5)

La Salle’s single round robin assignment against six UAAP schools ended with UP, where the Green and White fell short again. Magpily (1 point) remained the lone bright spot with a win against Lacambra. Revita (0.5 point) and UP’s Macapuno recorded a deadlock, while Espiritu and Olendo took home Ls.
