As some companies request employees return to the office, a growing majority is staying home.

Why it matters: Leadership that’s unwilling to acknowledge the impact of WFH over the past two years could see significant employee departures if their “vision” doesn’t align with the reality that remote work is becoming a deal-breaker.

The details: Out-of-touch CEOs have been requesting (or demanding) a return to the pre-pandemic, in-office work. While some companies have embraced the future of work that’s not tied to real estate usage, others have doubled-down on their pre-pandemic mindset.

The big picture: If remote work continues to be a deal-breaker for job seekers, companies without remote-first or hybrid employment may simply not be able to employ senior- and executive-level hires. Cultural shifts take time, but 2022 could be the year of public failures: CEOs might try to force corporate employees back to the office, only to have fewer show up and even fewer sign offer letters.
