The Journey Is The Reward

Learning to do what you love doesn’t happen over night. It takes time.

The problem is that we usually can’t define it well enough in the begining. What is it exactley that we are suppose to be loving? We know that it is out there, so we are searching – looking for a place to settle in. Until then we are tourtured. Unsatisifed. Not quite doing what we love, yet.

We know all about the photo montage. This is the segment during a movie where five years of hard work flies by in three minutes. Loud music, smiling photos, and a ‘you can do it’ attitude make years of hard labor seem like nothing.

It’s a setup.

The montage is the middle. It is the big part, but like the movies, we love to think about the begining and the end. Never the middle. We breze over the middle. We pretend that it doesn’t apply to us.

It applies to us.

Our success won’t come in three minutes. We will need to stick with it longer than that, and that’s the hard part. That’s the journey.

The journey to doing what you love is hard to define. It isn’t the same for everyone, but it is always worth it in the end.

We know that it’s going to be a bunch of hard work. We’re going to have to check our doubts at the door time and time again. We’re going to have to focus on the goal rather than the present. We’re going to have to become an expert at the journey. It’s going to last longer than three minutes.

Whatever you are doing right now is part of that journey.

The thing about a journey, is that it isn’t over until you get there. You might be making a pit stop, filling your tank, or maybe you’ve made a wrong turn. Either way, if you keep at it long enough, you are bound to reach your destination, eventually.

The funny thing about the journey is that the destination can’t be reached without it. In so many ways, the journey will define what you love in the end. They say that the journey is the reward, and you know what? They are probably right.
