How productive is your construction site? (PART 1)
This is probably a question that you have asked yourself many times but have never had the time to fully investigate.
During the course of our product discovery, we have met many project managers, site superintendents that have given a lot of thought on how to improve the productivity on their site. The results of their efforts were amazing. Not only productivity on their site improved significantly , their project site benefited from better workflows, better communications, better safety, less errors and disputes, better staff engagement and retention, and ultimately increased profit margins for their projects.
These project managers understood that it was important to work smarter instead of harder. Project managers that are adopting new technologies and workflows on site are not the norm. In an industry where new ways of doing things are often received with hesitation and sometimes push back, it does take a certain level of persistence and risk-taking to question the status quo and explore different alternatives to increase productivity. But the results speak for themselves.
On project sites that have adopted Dockmasters, we have measured a significant cut on the time site coordinators and trades are spending on making bookings and scheduling deliveries. An activity that used to take several back and forth, sometimes stretching over hours, can now be done in a matter of a few minutes with minimal involvement from each party.
This is a good example where an inefficient workflow has been identified and replaced with a better alternative.
This brings us back to the question of this blog:
“How productive is your construction site?”
In the next few weeks, we will help you answer this question by exploring several methods that you can use to identify problematic workflows on your construction sites and estimate the productivity loss associated with these activities. These methods will help you assess which workflows need your attention the most and where working smarter will be the most impactful.
