Highly gifted woman doing some deep thinking — by Ryan Jacobson

The problem with IQ tests is that people creating them are usually of average intelligence. They can’t see as can’t see as many patterns as highly gifted people (like you and me).

Here’s a classic example.

What is the next number in the sequence: 1, 2, 3, 4?

The average person will say 5. It makes sense, but it’s far from the only valid answer.

It could also be:

  • 2 because King Canute II of Sweden died in 1234
  • 3 because 1,2,3,4,3,2,1 displays a pleasant symmetry.
  • 9 because 1+2+3+4=9

Of course, these answers will seem weird (even nonsensical) to average people, but highly gifted individuals will get my drift.

Here’s another one:

What is the next number in the sequence: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9?

The average person will say 10, but highly gifted individuals might say 37 because they know the phone number…
