Do you prefer to pay extra for that branded, stylish, and luxurious outfit? Or are you happy with non-designer clothes? Both options keep you warm; functionally, they do the exact same thing. But we all know that style, looks, and prestige matters a lot to many people.

That is the choice we aim to give players with our card frame system.

Unlike most other card games, Doctor Who: Worlds Apart separates the terms “card(the functional in-game asset) and “frame(a cosmetic card border with no functional impact on gameplay) into two different concepts in a flexible cosmetic system.

At the game’s initial presale in October, you will be able to purchase different card packs that each contain different types of cosmetic card frames based on aliens and items from the show.

Each individual card comes with 1 of 12 different frames, and every card pack has a different price tag depending on the max supply of the card frames available in the pack, though they all have the exact same drop rate of card rarities.

In other words, the more expensive the pack is, the higher the chances of getting limited-edition cosmetic card frames from it, while the chances to acquire rare and powerful cards stay exactly the same no matter how expensive the card pack is.

Doctor Who: Worlds Apart Standard Frame

The cards with the blue Standard frame will always be cheaper than the cards with more unique and rare frames, even though the cards themselves have the exact same gameplay function.

It is our aim to reduce the pay-to-win aspects that are typical for games of this genre, while still giving collectors something scarce, beautiful, and unique to collect.

12 different frames have been planned for the presale, but you can expect many more before the actual game releases in 2021, and even more each following year.

Frame Types

There are two overall categories of frames:

  • Core frames of which there are 5: Default, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Black Diamond as shown throughout this article.
  • Alien frames of which there will be 7 at the presale.

With over 200 cards and 12 different frames, there are more than 2,400 different frame/card combinations to collect and trade!

Core Frames

The Core frames have an unlimited supply, meaning you will always be able to get every card with one of these 5 frames by buying the Core card pack.

Additionally, as your cards gain experience in the upcoming game, they will progress from Standard to Black Diamond on a per-card basis.
For instance, unlocking the Gold frame on one Cyber Bill Potts card doesn’t carry over to all of the other Cyber Bill Potts cards you own. In that regard, these cards function much like physical cards in that they each have their own identity, progress, and history.

This is why we say “frame/card combinations.” Each card has a native frame programmed into it which is permanently attached to that specific card’s ID.

More about card history in an upcoming article.

Alien Frames

The Alien frames all have a limited supply per card and will be revealed during the coming weeks across our social channels. Each Alien frame is based on aliens or items from the show, for instance, Bronze Dalek, Ice Warrior, and… did someone say TARDIS?!

Doctor Who: Worlds Apart Bronze Dalek Frame

Each Alien frame has its own maximum supply per card, anywhere from 1,000 frames per card, like the Bronze Dalek frame, down to 100 and below for the super rare frames.

“Per card” in this context simply means that e.g. for each Cyber Bill Potts card, only 1,000 Bronze Dalek frames will ever exist. So the total supply of ALL Bronze Dalek Frames across the entire card library would be 1,000 x the total number of cards in the library.

In the future when new cards are released, however, you will still be able to buy the NEW cards (released in the coming years) with the OLD frames via a non-random card creator directly. This means that the total supply of Bronze Dalek frames (and all other Alien frames) will increase, but the amount of Amy Pond cards with this frame will remain the same as the limit is still 1,000 Bronze Dalek frames per card.

All cards with an Alien frame can also be levelled up in-game to unlock the 5 Core frames, but cards that came with a Core frame initially will never be able to unlock an Alien frame.

This keeps the game playable at a reasonable cost for new players many years from now — no matter what card they want to buy and use in their decks— while making sure that those who own limited-supply frames have their interests protected.
