Doctor Who: Worlds Apart Trading Card Game

The upcoming TCG based on BBC’s hit show, Doctor Who, lets players dive head-first into the Whoniverse with full control over their own fate. You take on the role of a young adventurer who, after leaving the Time Lord Academy, must now find your own way through the universe.

Using your TARDIS to traverse the time vortex, you will need to travel through time and space to assemble a team of the strongest creatures and characters to aid you in battle. Exactly who you team up with is entirely up to you…

Gameplay Overview

Doctor Who: Worlds Apart, which is set to release in 2021, is a cutthroat and complex card game of constant action with familiar mechanics from games such as Magic: The Gathering and Hearthstone, plus a few timey-wimey twists sprinkled in, of course!

The core gameplay revolves around chess-like matches where both players can react once to their opponent’s plays and attacks, emphasizing on strategy, planning, and wits. Will you block the attack with a Creature? Cast a Flash to counter an Ability or Moment? Activate an Object? This is not a game that lets you sit idle for more than a few seconds at a time!

You can build a deck with the cards you own and head straight into battle against other players where you will have to deploy Companions, Creatures, Objects, Flashes, Moments, and more to outsmart, outplay, and outmanoeuvre your opponents while levelling up your cards and earning rewards along the way.

Companions: Choose Your Allegiance 🤖👾🧚‍♂️

The game will feature lots of companions from the TV show represented in the game with the card type “Companion” — a subtype of Creature cards — but with an untraditional twist: They are not just limited to the Doctor’s companions from the show. Instead, players will be able to choose between any notable character, friendly or… not so friendly.

Any notable character can become your companion.

Since you play as an unknown Time Lord with your own TARDIS and gadgets, you also see the various characters and aliens with your own eyes; your own mind. This means that anyone you decide to team up with by including them in your deck will be your companions.

Will you befriend the nefarious Davros? Will you fight alongside Restac in the depths? Or will you summon the Doctor to help you in battle? There are loads of iconic characters to choose from, and the choice is yours.

Card Design

The presale in October features over 200 cards based on characters, items, and other references from a multitude of Doctor Who material. We are setting the tone of the project by including older and lesser-known references from before 2005, but a majority of new cards will be based on the TV series from 2005 and up.

As seen in the anatomy chart, each card has a bunch of information to consider.

In the game you will be using Artron Energy to cast your cards, the cost of which is signified by the number in the top.
A Creature’s attack power determines how much damage it deals, while its health determines how much damage it can take before it dies.

By default, all attacks will target the opponent’s TARDIS, but your attacks can be blocked if there are enemy creatures on the board. The player who reduces the health of the other player’s TARDIS to 0 wins

What does the future hold?

These initial 200+ cards of the upcoming presale are merely a taste of what’s to come, though!

Going forward, hundreds of new cards will be released every year for you to collect and play with.

There will also be several unique frames to collect for each card. Most of these frames are based on aliens and items from the show — stay tuned for the next spotlight for more information on card frames and how they work differently from other games.
