An ophthalmic island created with Midjourney.

Midjourney blurs the lines between the creativity of man and machine. The platform uses Stable Diffusion, a machine learning algorithm which generates images by iteratively applying a series of transformations to a starting image, honing the image generated on each iteration.

It uses some mathematical magic called partial differential equations to evolve the image over time, creating a smooth and stable output. This has rapidly evolved from a process which takes hours or days, to just a few seconds, with the result being highly detailed and unique artworks that are unlike anything produced by classical art-making techniques.

The technology furthers the process by enabling users to customize the output of the Stable Diffusion algorithm. For example, we can specify the starting image, choose from a variety of different filters and transformations, upscale the image, and adjust various parameters of the algorithm to create their own unique artworks.

In this way, highly detailed images can be constructed, composed of millions of individual pixels.

One aspect of using Stable Diffusion is the ability to create completely original artworks that are not limited by our own abilities or imagination. Sometimes the most unique creations happen because of a “misunderstanding” of the prompt which has been provided. Here are some other artworks which I have used Midjourney to generate, an example of a pleasant error being the watercolour painting of an eye, in which Midjourney mistakenly inserts an iris flower instead of an iris.

Prompts above:

“A stunning human eye as an intricate labyrinth sculpture”

“The eye as a beautiful watercolour artwork, detailed”

“A stunning medieval anatomical wallchart of the human eye”

“A large bowl of fruit laid out like the human eye, photorealistic”

“A beautiful ornate watercolour anatomical painting of the human eye”

“The eye as a martian landscape with a crater”

“A beautiful watercolour macro image of a human eye with emphasis on the iris”
