Dear Old Friend

it’s been awhile since we last spoke
things didn’t end well, this I know

our situation complicated, confused
together, but never close enough

yearning for more, and more once again
the price? a friendship

observation never indicative of shame
but to deny secrecy would be a lie

a small wooden elephant, an everlasting reminder
a birthday surprise, never forgetten

desert nachos, strawberry shortcakes, boba, gravy
memories abound, memories abound

happiness has always been a funny thing
forever chasing, yet rarely attained

seconds to hours, days to years
my dear old friend, it’s been too long
