About Shih-Tzu
Shih-Tzu is also known as a “Lion Dog”. Those big dark eyes and with those sweet expressions. Shih-Tzu is one of the best dog breeds for children and their owners are very delighted with the giggles and mischief they do on the go. Being cute is this breed trademark. They are especially affectionate with children. These dogs are also known for royalty. Owned by most Chinese kings and emperors.
Origin
The name came from the Chinese word “Lion”. They are breed in resembling of a lion. This dog is also called as a “Tibetian lion dog” There are various theories revolved around the creation of this breed. They stemmed from the cross between Pekingese and Lhasa Apso. A Tibetian dog was given by Dalai Lama to various Chinese emperors.
When you own a Shih-Tzu you own a little bit of the Chinese history. The Shih-Tzu was originated from China. They are part of the royal family. So they refused to sell or trade to any other people. But in the year 1930. The Shih-Tzu was traded to England and Norway. Then the British kennel club recognized this breed in 1935 and then Shih-Tzu was introduced in American after the World-war 2.
Appearance
Shih-Tzu is a sturdy little dog with big dark eyes. They have a soft and long double coat. They stand not more than 26.7cm and their ideal weight is somewhere between 4.5 to 7.3 kg. The traditions long silky coat requires daily brushing. Because of its long and fast growing hair, they need to be groomed regularly.
Nutrition
They will thrive well on high nutrient dog foods. Some of them are prone to get overweight, so don’t feed more and always have a look at the dog’s calorie intake and the weight level. Treats can be an important aid in training the Shih-Tzu. But too many may lead to obesity. Learn about which human food is safe for your dog and consult a veterinarian and feed your dog. Always have a look at their weight level and health conditions all the time.
Exercise
They are breed to be a house companion and so they require minimal exercise. Short daily walks and the indoor play time will be helpful. As a small dog breed and spent most of their time inside the royal palaces, they make a great pet if you live in an apartment or lack a big backyard. Some dogs love to dig holes and chase cats, but a Shih Tzu’s idea of fun is sitting in your lap acting adorable as you try to watch TV.
Training
Training the Shih Tzu is both amazing and frustrating experience. The breed tends to charm his owner into letting him have his own way, which can result in a chubby, less-than-completely-housebroken pet who is difficult to groom. Because they are a people’s dog they need to be trained with praises and rewards. Early socialization and the puppy training classes are recommended to help them grow into a well-mannered companion.
Health
Due to the heavy coat and the short faces, they do not tolerate heat well and they are not good swimmers. Most Shih-Tzu are generally healthy and regular health checkups like Hip Dysplasia, Patellar lunation and the eye anomalies like Cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, retinal detachments due to the excessive exposure in the air because of their improperly closing eyelids.
