It’s Time to End the False “Self-Help vs. Social Change” Debate

Yes, it is possible to fight injustice AND go to yoga.

Let me say this louder for the folks in the back: self-help and personal wellness are not in conflict with making radical social change. I can understand where the belief in this false dichotomy between wellness and social justice came from, but it’s time to put it to bed.

In case you’ve missed it, there’s an unfortunate trend in some corners of Leftist, radical and activist culture that disparages, and sometimes actively opposes, self-help and wellness activities. It seems to be a reaction against the tone-deafness of “wellness culture” in the face of widespread material scarcity and economic insecurity for the working class. Essentially, “Fuck your meditation app. We need affordable housing and healthcare.”

It’s a common trope because it’s so relatable. A pop culture that encourages doing more yoga and putting turmeric in everything is laughably out of touch with the daily concerns of most Americans’ lives. Meditating might make us more relaxed, sure, but you know what would definitely help us relax? Universal healthcare through this global pandemic, real solutions to climate change and not being on the brink of a second civil war.
