A few years ago during my three-week vacation on Rikers Island, I befriended a completely civilized and thoughtful inmate in the next bunk who had just begun serving a one-year sentence at the “resort.” Curious to discover how such a cultured man had managed to get locked up for a “bullet” (vernacular for a year), I inquired therein to discover he’d been working as an operative for some sketchy politician and had done something at that man’s behest even though he knew it was illegal and landed in the pokey as a result. I felt sorry for the guy — even as I was serving time at Rikers owing to a bureaucrat’s mistake (and was released when the City realized they’d falsely imprisoned me).

In some measure, Michael Cohen’s story is similar to the man’s I just mentioned. Cohen was (and is) a $4 mutt who graduated from the lowest-rated law school in the entire country, latched onto a crooked/grifting realtor, and was stupid enough to break the law on his boss’s behalf. And then he got even stupider by lying to Congress about what he had or hadn’t done in an ill-advised attempt to protect his employer.

When it was all said and done, Cohen served Trump’s time. After all, Cohen wasn’t the guy who (allegedly) fucked the porn star. He didn’t have to pay her off to keep the story under wraps to protect his own…
