It was long since we went out for short trips. So we decided to go out somewhere for the weekend. I used to go to a library in Egmore where I’ve seen a government museum nearby but I’ve never gone to the museum which I always wanted to visit. So, I told my husband and we decided to go there on a Sunday. We started by afternoon. It’s 30Km away from our place and I get motion sickness if I travel by car for a long time. So, we went by cab for half the way, and then by train and then again by cab and reached the place by 3.30 PM. We got tickets for each of us and entered the museum. There were two huge dinosaur statues at the entrance. We took a few snaps and entered the first block.

Dolls of men, women, and children dressed in different clothes were exhibited behind the glasses, representing the wide cultural heritage of India and also various parts of the world. The dolls were dressed in various dancing attires like Bharathanatiyam, Kuchipudi etc. There were models made of wood and paintings of various civilizations like Mycenaen, Indus Valley, Egyptian and much more civilizations of the world. It also had facts about dresses and various languages. We took few photos there and went upstairs where Small sculptures made out of shells were beautifully exhibited and also we saw paper art(origami). Seeing those, I too felt interested in learning the art of origami.

The next block which was the gallery of contemporary art contained the old materials used by people like carts, old radios, and computers which were huge in size and also typewriting machines and motors were also exhibited. It was interesting to see those big rusted machines. I saw the radio in the size of a huge trunk for the first time and realized that the technology has come through a very long way. It also contained old models of trains and train engines. Samples of various types of types of soil like river sand, concentrate, granulated slag, illuminate whose names I had literally forgotten after my school days were also exhibited. Models of rockets, yacht, and 10 feet tall paintings of the Governors of the British period where exhibited in different sections. There were a great collection of art by the famous artist Raja Ravi Varma and also by other artists. Those magnificent paintings by the art legends were truly admirable. There were models of internal organs of humans and other animals also there were photographs of Supernova, Milkyway etc,. Certain exhibits looked well maintained and beautiful where as a few were broken and covered with dust. We were not allowed to take photos at this place.

There was another place called the Children’s science park. We couldn’t visit that place as only children were permitted. It took one and a half hours to walk around the museum. Our legs started to pain as we came out of the museum. We luckily found a cement bench on which we rested. The watchman came whistling indicating the closure time of the museum and we had to walk away. The museum wasn’t maintained properly just like any other government property, but it was informative and will be a good place to take kids for an outing.
