The best teams are diverse teams

Here at Domain we work in an extremely multi-cultural environment and it is no surprise because according to a blog I read, 49% of Australians are born overseas, or they have at least one parent who was.

By definition, multiculturalism is the presence of, or support for the presence of, several distinct cultural or ethnic groups within a society.

Therefore, we Domain-ites believe it is super important to promote a sense of inclusiveness, respect and belonging — from the traditional owners and custodians of this land to those who have come here from various countries across the world.

It is no secret — or at least it shouldn’t be — that businesses perform better when people feel included. When a company shows that they are strongly committed to supporting diversity, it leads to a far more open, respectful and inclusive culture and work environment for everyone, which is why we are totally on board with celebrating our cultural diversity.

And how do we celebrate our cultural diversity — with food of course by holding an International Cuisine Day.

We come together to eat

Apart from the celebration of different cultures, this time allows us the opportunity to learn about other people’s backgrounds and hear stories about how food plays such an important role in their lives.

This year’s International Cuisine Day was held on Friday 14 September and was a smorgasboard of gastronomical delights from all corners of this fine globe. We were tempted with dumplings, a variety of quiches, curry, coconut pudding, sausage rolls, minced pork rice and Eskimo lolly cakes to name a few.

We came from around the world to share the dazzling array of food ideas we’ve got between us and blew each others’ minds. This country, our city and our company are richer and better because we let ourselves be amazed by each other. As Jason Pellegrino says: the best teams are diverse teams.

Happy Dave
