Best domain registrars in 2024

I have been buying, selling and developing domain names for many years now, and I’ve got the chance to try numerous domain registrars.

Unlike web hosting services where there are many varying factors and specs to take into account, domain registration is a pretty simple service.

The most important things you’d want in a domain registrar are: reasonable registration AND renewal prices, free Whois privacy, affordable extras like email and SSL, and good support.

Best Domain Registrars in 2024

The following are my personal favorite domain registrars that have fair prices without sneaky upselling.

1. Namecheap

Namecheap features

If I had to pick one provider as the best domain registrar in 2024, I’d go with Namecheap. Their pricing is affordable, they offer complete Whois privacy for free, and their live chat support has always been quick in answering my requests.

They’ve also got some decent add-ons at low prices, such as business email, SSL certificates, premium DNS, and web hosting plans. Their shared cPanel hosting is good for low-traffic sites, while you get more processing power with their (more costly) managed WordPress plans.

2. Spaceship

Spaceship features

Spaceship is a newcomer to the market, but not exactly so. It’s a new platform that is operated by the Namecheap team.

The main advantages of Spaceship over Namecheap are the more modern interface and the lower prices, especially renewal rates.

For example, you can buy a .com domain from Spaceship for $8.48, which renews for $9.48 (free Whois privacy included). Their cheapest email plan costs $4.88 for the first year then renews for $6.88 per year.

3. Dynadot

Dynadot features

Dynadot is another great place where you can buy a domain name at a cheap price. Their pricing is transparent and they don’t rip you off with overpriced upgrades like some other registrars do.

I’ve been using Dynadot for many years and it’s always a pleasure using their sleek interface. They have extra security features including a personal PIN that is used to unlock your account before making critical change (e.g. transferring a domain out).

4. Cloudflare

Cloudflare features

Cloudflare is mainly known for their networking and security solutions. Many developers use their DNS and CDN services (free and premium).

Cloudflare is also a domain registrar, but they aren’t in it for profit. You only pay the wholesale price for domain registration and renewal + ICANN fee.

But there is a catch, you must use their DNS and you won’t be able to change the domain’s nameservers. That’s why I’d only recommend this registrar for developers and technical users who know the basics of DNS management.

Another issue to be aware of is that if you have a free plan with Cloudflare, you only get community support but no official support unless you subscribe to a paid plan.

5. NameSilo

NameSilo features

NameSilo doesn’t get a lot of mentions on review sites, but most of those aren’t objective reviews anyway.

I’ve known NameSilo for a long time and it’s quite reputable among domainers and webmasters. My experience with NameSilo has been positive overall, although I’m not a big fan of their outdated dashboard.

Despite the recent price hikes, it’s still an affordable registrar and you get Whois privacy protection for free.

Which Domain Registrar Offers Cheap Email?

Namecheap, Spaceship, and Dynadot offer cheap email plans with domain registration. Dynadot has a free email plan that gives you one email address, or you can get unlimited email addresses with the Pro plan for $20 per year.

Which is The Best Domain Registrar Recommended on Reddit?

Many tech-savvy Redditors share my opinion on which registrars offer the best value for money these days.

Namecheap, Cloudflare, and Dynadot are among the top recommendations for an affordable domain registrar on Reddit as of 2024. Spaceship is starting to get some recognition on Reddit as well.

On the other hand, some popular companies like GoDaddy, Domain.com, and Bluehost don’t get a lot of favorable reviews on Reddit, which I also agree with. Although they offer discounted prices initially, their renewal rates are high and they charge an additional fee for complete Whois privacy.

How to Choose The Best Domain Registrar?

These are the most important factors to keep in mind when picking a domain registrar for your website:

  • Renewal price: Make sure to check the renewal price for the TLD you’re interested in. Many registrars charge a higher price for renewal compared to initial registration.
  • Whois privacy: Choose a registrar that offers complete Whois privacy for free. Avoid those that charge extra for it.
  • Security features: Domain transfer lock and two-factor authentication are the most crucial security features you should look for.
  • Support: Stick to registrars that have 24/7 support that is responsive and helpful. Contact them before placing an order to see how fast they respond.
  • Customer feedback: Look for real customer reviews on Reddit, webmaster forums, G2, and Trustpilot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you buy a domain name forever?

No, you can’t. The maximum registration period of a domain name is ten years. You can renew your domain at any time given that its current registration period can’t exceed ten years.

What is the cheapest domain registrar in 2024?

Namecheap, Spaceship, Dynadot and Cloudflare have the cheapest domain registration prices as of 2024. Cloudflare and Spaceship have the cheapest renewal rates.

Which domain registrars accept Bitcoin?

Namecheap, Spaceship, Dynadot and NameSilo are the top registrars that allow you to pay with Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

Can you buy a domain name from Google?

Google Domains shut down in 2023 and you can no longer register domains with Google. They transferred their clients to Squarespace, but there are better alternatives with lower prices and better support.

Can you register a domain anonymously?

It is necessary to provide your accurate contact information when registering a domain name. Providing fake details can lead to your domain getting suspended. You can enable Whois privacy (if available) to hide your personal contact details from the public Whois database.

What is the best domain extension?

The .com extension (or TLD) is by far the best choice for almost any type of website, be it commercial, personal or otherwise. You can’t go wrong with the .com extension if you manage to find a suitable .com domain that’s available for registration. The next best options are: .net, .co, .blog, .pro, and .io.
