Chapter Thirteen

“Lainey, I just can’t. I’m sorry. Something urgent has come up.”

“Girl, unless someone’s dying, or your damned house in on fire, you’re live in five minutes. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. We got six callers waiting on the line. Waiting! That’s bad for business, chère, real bad, and I won’t stand for it. You got me?”

Damn it. She needed the night off. She knew it was Saturday night. The busiest time in this business, but she couldn’t bear the thought of talking to Dean. It was too close to their chat last night. Far likelier that he’d recognize her voice when he called her tonight like he was supposed to. How the hell could she get out of this? She sighed.

“Besides, do you have any idea how much your new caller has spent in the past week and a half? He’s called four times. Four. In nine days. If he calls again tonight, you need to be available. Another call or two with him and you’ll get your next bonus already.”

She didn’t care about the bonus. Fear gripped her. How could she explain it to Lainey without jeopardizing her time there? She still needed the money. Desperately.
