Daily Post #321 You Must Unlearn What You Have Learned
For my last STAR WARS themed post this week, I’m ending off with another Yoda quote. Some of you might have been expecting the “Try not! Do… or do not. There is no try” classic, but I decided to pick one that resonates even better with myself and my mindset.
It’s from the second movie in the franchise, The Empire Strikes Back (the best one of them all, hands down, IMHO) when Luke is practicing his Jedi skills on Dagobah with Yoda. R2-D2 lets Luke know that his X-Wing fighter is sinking in the swamp, to which Luke reacts with a “We’ll never get it out now”, and trying and failing to raise it (after getting the “Try not!” quote thrown at him). Yoda counters with “You must unlearn what you have learned.
And that’s the magic phrase there, the answer to all innovation, creativity and progress. We need to let go of preconcieved perceptions of what is possible or not, what we can do or not and what is right or not, and seek solutions beyond what is considered possible today.
