Daily Post #401 Celebrating Winnie The Pooh Day

Today on January 18th we’re celebrating Winnie The Pooh Day, the wonderfully naïve yet lovable main character of the books A.A Milne wrote for his son, Christopher Robin.

The interesting background story is that Milne actually came back from World War 1 with what today would be called PTSD and moved out into the countryside to find peace, a countryside he spent hours exploring, accompanied by his son and his son’s stuffed animal collection, and that’s how the stories came to life. Milne was a successful writer before the war (and after) but it was the stories he wrote with and for his son that made him famous.

He only wrote four books about Winnie the Pooh, but they were the “Harry Potter’s” of their time, and Pooh Bear and his friends have been part of our popular culture ever since.

And even though the books are meant for small children, the zen-like truths spoken by Pooh bear and his friends are amazingly insightful.

Like the one in today’s post, about those things that seem to take on a life of their own if you keep them to yourself, in your head, but once you actually talk about them and let them out, they don’t seem so bad after all.

And just like Christopher Robin, Pooh and the rest of the gang, you need good friends around you to share the hardships, love and happiness of life.

Or as Eeyore put it: “After all, one can’t complain. I have my friends.”

Here’s a list of 50 quotes from the books, well worth reading:
