As the old saying goes “never ask for money when you need it” or with a start-up twist, “Don’t be too desperate when asking for money” 😉
In general people want to help, they want to feel useful and feel that they are bringing something to the table.
When opening every discussion with a VC or a business angel by saying “We need this much cash” then you risk closing down that discussion very quickly.
Just like you probably don’t like people who first thing send you that sales pitch after connecting on LinkedIn, potential investors don’t like you putting your ask out there first thing.
Start by asking them to contribute, ask for advice, network, suggestions of how to move forward, and as the discussion progresses, you can ease into your actual ask.
