Ok so in my series of 10 posts about growth mindset, here comes number 6 and this one is the first of three of the topic of “how to develop a growth mindset”.

I have chosen to divide them up into three separate posts:

SELF — things connected to your inner self

INTERACTION— things connected to others and the world around you.

ACTION— things you can do

So, SELF, here goes, my top five:

Become purpose driven. I’m not saying everyone should find their calling, but being purpose driven makes it so much easier to take on challenges and also learn new things. One of the key motivators to learning is understand why you want or need to learn.

This is something I struggled with for a long time. I come from a long line of calling-driven, purpose-driven people; Priests, headmasters, doctors, nurses etc. But me? nothing. And just being in business didn’t cut it, just making money has no attraction to me, money for what? to achieve what?

However, through teaching, coaching and working with other people I have come to realize that my purpose (and superpower) is to help others grow and succeed. I might not be the best soccer player, but I am definitely one of the best soccer coaches.

Be authentic. Be yourself, be true, be authentic, do things with intention and yes, purpose. This will increase your trust in yourself and other’s trust in you.

Embrace imperfection. In a previous post I wrote about the importance to “dare to suck”, to admit that you don’t know or can’t do something. That is after all the starting point of growth. Understand your flaws, admit them and work on them, while at the same time accepting the flaws in others. No one is perfect, and by accepting that you will also accept other people just as they are, and just as you want them to accept you.

Embrace strengths. Just as you need to acknowledge your flaws, you also need to see to your strengths has well. Skills, knowledge, personality, abilty; you have a lot to offer. And just by deciding to develop a growth mindset, you have shown a mental decisiveness that it worth celebrating.

Cultivate resilience. Working your way to a growth mindset isn’t a two-day fix. It’s a reshaping of your mind, how you see yourself and the world around you. It will take time, effort and yes, a lot of falling down and getting up. Becoming resilient is a lot about practicing acceptance of a situation but not letting that situation bring you down. Practice patience and mindfulness, but not resignation or disconnection.
