They might seem a little boring, having a basic understanding of what social media algorithms are and how they work is important. Knowing which content each platform prefers should help you reach more people, increase brand awareness and generate donations.

Algorithms are essentially small chunks of mathematical data that learn our habits (from a secret obsession for cat videos to which music we prefer at certain times of day) and then show us information that’s relevant to us. Although it might feel a little creepy algorithms are here to make our experience of apps and websites better because the content we’re shown is custom to us.

But they have made social media marketing a little trickier. Almost all of your followers used to see your posts in their feeds, but recent changes to social media algorithms has changed this. Don’t panic — because we think it’s a good thing.

It simply means you have to post and write slightly different content for each platform. It gives you the chance to build truly meaningful relationships with your supporters, both on and offline, which in our opinion is worth so much more than 1000s of likes that don’t result in any donations.
