This week, we find out a little more about this national charity’s work, with a little help from its Supporter Engagement Executive, Hanna Chorley.
Back in 1977, Derek Mitchell’s wife, Isobel, was treated for leukaemia at King’s College Hospital in London. Following this, Derek formed The Elimination of Leukaemia Fund to support the hospital’s haematology department.
Since then the charity has gone from strength to strength: offering grants to blood cancer specialists in hospitals across the country and facilitating the opening the opening of four specialist blood cancer wards at King’s Hospital.
‘Over our 40-year history, we have transformed the haematology services at King’s College, London,’ Hanna explains. ‘[We] are now working with them to pioneer mind and body care for all families going through blood cancer.’
Today, the charity is known as Leukaemia UK and offers a variety of services including: funding essential emotional support; offering help to ease financial worries; funding innovative research into care and treatment for leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and other blood disorders; and offering other funding to pay for essentials such as additional staff, ward and room refurbishments, and new blood cancer care equipment.
The Leukaemia UK website is jam-packed full of success stories and news of encouraging breakthroughs and treatment advances, but they still need your help to continue to fund the vital research projects attempting to improve the lives of cancer sufferers up and down the country.
