The World’s Greatest City

I almost forgot

There’s a reason why New York City is such an international melting pot. Half the world wants to live here. And the other half at least, wants to visit. Having lived in the Big Apple for almost 50 years, I’m good at forgetting all that — and just notice all the filth and chaos that often defines New York.

There were times during my years riding around on my bike collecting money from escorts that I’d think to myself while pedaling past the United Nations for the one-thousandth time, “Ya know, people come right here from all over the world to see this. And all you can think about is whether this hooker is gonna be a pain in the ass — or just pay her bill without some bullshit excuse.”

So anyway — last night, the app fucked me out of a $9.50 job while I was pedaling down Lexington and 32nd Street (somehow, it didn’t understand that I hit “accept”) and I didn’t get another ping until I parked in front of Momofuku 10 minutes and a mile and a half later.

The app said $22 — and it was going way down to the financial area. I accepted quickly and then checked to see where the two deliveries were going. I knew I was in trouble. The addresses were on the obscure side. New York is a hodgepodge down there, and the app sucks at directing dashers. Oh well! I’ll cross the two bridges when I come to them.
