Flex week for the win!

At BrightGauge we have the concept of flex weeks twice a year. I’ve written about this before but the concept is simple:

  1. No formal office hours
  2. All regularly scheduled meetings are cancelled
  3. No projects are due during this week

The purpose is to force a mini-break for everyone. A break in rhythm. A break in monotony. And lastly, it serves as a little refresher on how much work can be done with no distractions (deep work!) and how unimportant certain regularly scheduled meetings can be.

The team took advantage.

One of our support team members did work from South Beach, literally sand in his toes. One of our devs did work from Toronto while staying at a friends house. For me, I kept my normal routine of work for 2017 but decided twice to insert hobby time into one of my work segments (played a little guilt free golf).

Nothing better

Our Director of Engineer worked on his own project that improved performance of the app. One of our newest devs dug deep into our customer churn to see if she can figure out some unique correlations. And one of our senior devs is close to shipping a feature thats been stale on our backlog. All projects self directed and with great outcomes in one week.

In the long haul, balance is everything

We do have a blast working together at the office throughout the year but these flex weeks are such a unique opportunity to break up the year. We want everyone to work together for a long time and a little break like this helps keep balance. I think we’ll have to experiment with more.

Flex Week delivered again! If you live in Miami and interested in joining, we have a bunch of openings… https://www.brightgauge.com/careers/
