Today’s iOS 10 Emoji Updates Are Way Better Than We Expected
There’s 72 new options and they’re all kinds of awesome.
At long last, iOS 10 is here. With it comes features like lasers in text messages, voicemail transcription and (our favorite) an updated set of emoji. Yes, emoji are fun—but they’re also powerful little pictographs, so we were glad to see that this latest update took care of some glaring gender and racial imbalances. For example, there’s now a woman weightlifter and a pride flag. The update also treads some apolitical ground by bringing a little nuance to some much-loved icons, like the bathtub, which now has bubbles. Behold, the 10 best emoji updates for iOS 10.
A pride flag waves in the new operating system.
In an emoji take on Title IX, all athletes can now be men or women.
The wheelchair symbol’s person is displayed as a more active position.
Some emoji are now more gender-inclusive.
Families are more realistic, with single-parent and same-sex couple options.
In an act of wishful thinking, Apple replaced the pistol with a squirt gun.
Not just women get haircuts, after all.
The seemingly empty bathtub is now a gleeful bubble bath.
Overall, the new emoji are catching up with the overall trend of being less shiny, as showcased in the latest couple of operating systems.
Except for a few icons, like the smiling poop, which now looks more 3D.
