‘Irresponsible’ Women Are Merely ‘Hosts’ For Babies, Politician Says

Read this now.

Dear women, allow me to apologize on behalf of straight white men everywhere — because they just keep saying the dumbest shit about your bodies.

Today, we’re gonna have to add another item to the list: comments made by an Oklahoma state representative about women’s bodies not being their own, but rather “separate…hosts” for babies.

Rep. Justin Humphrey, who represents Oklahoma’s 19th district in the state legislature, made the remarks to a reporter from The Intercept in an article published Monday morning.

Humphrey is backing a bill that would require a woman to get written consent from the father of her fetus before she is allowed to have an abortion in Oklahoma, which has some of the most draconian anti-abortion laws in the US.

“I believe one of the breakdowns in our society is that we have excluded the man out of all of these types of decisions,” Humphrey told The Intercept.

“I understand that they [women] feel like that is their body. I feel like it is a separate — what I call them is, is you’re a ‘host.’ And you know when you enter into a relationship you’re going to be that host,” he added.

Humphrey went on to assert that it’s “irresponsible” for women to get pregnant in the first place:

“Hey, your body is your body and be responsible with it. But after you’re irresponsible then don’t claim, well, I can just go and do this [abortion] with another body, when you’re the host and you invited that in.”

The proposed law that Humphrey wrote, HB 1441, also allows abortions to be stalled while the father of the fetus gets paternity tests.

The only humane part about the bill, it seems, is that it makes exceptions for women who were impregnated during a rape or whose pregnancy is life-threatening.

The bill is scheduled to be heard on Valentine’s Day.
