Brock Turner Is Getting Out Of Jail Early?
Is this a joke?
This Friday, convicted rapist Brock Turner will be released from Santa Clara County Jail after completing only half his sentence. That’s three months short of his six-month sentence—and shorter than most internships. For anyone who consciously blocked this heinous human out of their memory, a quick refresher:
On Jan. 17, 2015, Brock Turner raped an unconscious woman near a dumpster after a college party.
On Jan. 28, 2015, Brock Turner was formally charged with two counts of rape, two counts of penetration and one count of assault with intent to rape. He pleaded not guilty.
On Oct. 7, 2015 , Brock Turner’s rape charge was tossed out. He was ordered to stand trial on the remaining counts.
On March 30, 2016, Brock Turner was found guilty of the three remaining counts by a Santa Clara County jury.
On June 2, 2016, Brock Turner was convicted of sexual assault and faced a maximum of 14 years in prison. Instead, he was sentenced to six months in the Santa Clara County Jail— a sentence so light, it sparked national outrage against both Turner and Judge Aaron Persky, revealing a leniency with how the court system deals with sexual assault.
Judge Aaron Persky no longer hears criminal cases, for obvious reasons. In fact, he’s faced forceful efforts to remove him from his bench entirely. Persky justified the six-month sentence, claiming anything more would have “severe impact” on Turner. Poor dude.
And let’s not forget Turner’s father, who wrote a letter in defense of his son, in which he referred to the rape as simply “20-minutes of action.”
But the outcry, rage and massive spotlight from justice seekers everywhere has not affected Brock Turner’s sentence.
So why is the Stanford rapist being released early? For “good behavior.” Comforting to know he hasn’t sexually assaulted anyone in the last three months, no?
