Happy 2021! 🎉 We’ve moved our blog to Medium, so expect all future blog posts to be here.

We’ve got many things we’re excited to cover in this development report, so without further ado, let’s hop in.

Dot Browser

Dot Browser has been getting a lot of new features over the past month. We have Windows builds working, which has been highly requested by everyone! We’ve just got a few things to clean up behind the scenes before we can start shipping the first alpha builds!

There has been a lot of work put into the build docs if you want to build Dot Browser on your platform to try it out or contribute code.

Library window which has been a core part of Firefox since the early days

We have been putting a lot of effort into redesigning large parts of the UI. Over the past month we have started replacing the ancient library window. In its place will be a new about:history and about:bookmarks Web UI page.

dotOS

Fun fact: I wasn’t hired to write this blog, instead I was hired to work on dotOS. So here is a summary of the first month of dotOS.

dotOS window manager theme

We have decided to focus on making a desktop environment. The first thing that I completed this month: the window manager. We have a basic window manager theme for both light and dark themes. Although in the future we may migrate from IceWM to Openbox because there are some GTK bugs with IceWM.

I have also spent a lot of time working on implementing AppIndicators with nothing to show for it.

Finally, I have been working on creating the panel. I have got indexing the applications on your computer and launching them working. There is a functional calendar widget as well.

Dot HQ

We’ve made some additions to Dot HQ, mainly, our new Telegram group!

We have also hired Ejaz and John Paul as developers and Marc Espín as a moderator for our Discord.

We’ve also got a brand spanking new domain, dothq.link. We will be using it for shortening URLS!dothq.link/jan21-pr

Thank you for reading!

Stay tuned for our February 2021 Development Report, coming out (you guessed it), 1st March 2021!
