Many ecommerce businesses reach a tipping point where replatforming becomes necessary for continued growth and scalability of their online sales.

Finding the right development team to help you replatform to Shopify Plus from Magento can be challenging and daunting. Here are a few things to look out for when choosing your Shopify Plus development team.

Have a clear understanding of why you want to replatform

Before selecting Shopify Plus developers for your replatforming project, it’s worthwhile double-checking why this project is happening and what you hope to achieve from it. This lends to a clearer brief and a better chance for you and your developers to reach your desired outcome.

Some questions to start you off:

  • What are the business objectives for replatforming?
  • What are the outcomes you’re hoping for from migrating to Shopify Plus?
  • Do you have a deadline?
  • Do you have any major integrations implemented with ERP, CRM or POS software?
  • What are the must-have features?

We ask all our clients these questions before we kick off any Shopify Plus replatforming projects to ensure the end result meets their needs. If your digital development agency doesn’t ask these questions, it’s a big warning sign.

Are they an official Shopify Plus Partner?

Take a look and double check that the development agency is listed in the Shopify Plus Partners Directory.

By being a Shopify Plus Partner, you can be assured that the agency has been vetted by the Shopify Plus team themselves, and that they are up to date with all the product and feature releases from Shopify.

Shopify Plus Partners also receive exclusive better support, access to beta features and weekly catch ups with a dedicated Shopify team member to ensure things are running smoothly.

Are they experienced in your vertical?

It will be a lot easier if you work with Shopify Plus developers who have worked with other merchants similar to your company size and in the same vertical. The reason for this is that they will have a better understanding of your industry, what consumers seek, and what features and integrations are important e.g. Afterpay alternatives for luxury fashion retailers.

At DotDev, we have extensive experience replatforming premium fashion and homewares brands like Calibre, Patagonia, Fenton & Fenton, alice McCALL and more. Because of our portfolio of work, we attract similar clientele who know that we deeply understand their needs and the industry they operate in.

What will the replatforming process look like?

Your Shopify Plus developers should be able to walk you through their replatforming process off the top of their heads, and explain every stage clearly in terms you understand.

This question is important because not only will it give you a sense of how experienced and organised they are, but also how well they can communicate technical tasks in simple language that non-technical folk can understand. You’ll want to see that they have clear processes and documentation in place.

Do they follow best security practices?

Unfortunately this is often an assumption, but we think it’s a question that needs to be asked. The Shopify Plus platform itself is Level 1 PCI DDS compliant (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard), however since your developers will have access to your Shopify Plus account, it’s important that they practice good security internally especially.

There is a great list of security questions to ask your development agency in Shopify’s Ecommerce RFP Template.

Have they worked with partner agencies before?

More often than not, there will be multiple agencies working on a replatforming project. Your development agency should have experience collaborating with other Shopify Plus Partner agencies.

With many of our replatforming projects, we have existing relationships with any other agencies involved which makes onboarding and collaboration quite seamless.

What support will they provide after the launch?

Great Shopify Plus developers will provide technical support and maintenance after the launch to ensure that their clients’ goals and requirements have been met.

Our in-house Technical Producers are experts at managing Shopify Plus accounts, and we take great care during and after hand-over periods to ensure our clients are confident with the platform.

A great way to gauge how supportive any agency is through their relationships with past clients. Do they have repeat clients, testimonials, and a good reputation within the industry? If you are in doubt, don’t hesitate to ask for a referral from a past client who’s had a similar project to yours.

Replatforming to a new ecommerce platform is not a small project, so it is more than worthwhile to do your due diligence and select your Shopify Plus developers carefully.

Fortunately, many of the Shopify agencies we know are great, with experience and care for their clientele. During the selection process, we find that the deciding factors do end up being experience in the client’s vertical and in the finer details of the replatforming project, such as third party integrations or custom apps required.
