--

More than 150,000 people come to Dothan each fall to celebrate peanut farmers and the harvest during the National Peanut Festival. The fun-filled 10-day yearly event features concerts with nationally recognized performers like the Pointer Sisters, Josh Wilson and Thomas Rhett, amusement rides, agricultural displays, livestock shows, a parade that included the Budweiser Clydesdales and TONS of peanuts. At the first festival in 1938, George Washington Carver, who introduced peanuts to the region after boll weevils destroyed the cotton crop, was the guest speaker. Since then, the festival has focused on fun for the whole family, with events and attractions such as a greased pig contest, a carnival with amusement rides, a demolition derby, a petting zoo and blue-ribbon contests featuring the region’s agricultural products and hobbies. The 72nd festival will be held November 6–15, 2015.
