As Richard Branson says, “If someone offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes — then learn how to do it later!” This is what happened with my first encounter with Digital Opportunity Trust Kenya, through the Youth Leadership Program, which has exposed me to great topics including Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Social Impact, Human Centered Design, Personal Branding among others.

As a Community Leader, I am engaged as a facilitator to deliver the StartUp! curriculum for Social Entrepreneurs which has given me a chance to interact with various participants using experiential learning; which has helped me improve my personality, and use my 21st century and ICT skills.

Through the Youth Leadership Program (YLP), I have done extensive research which inspired me to establish Collarosta Technologies and Crafts. A social enterprise founded by five partners with the goal of recruiting unemployed youth and provide them with the right skills to make the required artwork and crafts which will then be supplied to homes, offices and industries.

The support provided by DOT Kenya staff especially Assumpta Lishenga (Program Officer — Enterprise Support) and Petronilla Ogola (Learning Manager), other Youth Leaders who shared their constructive criticism, guidance and advice towards the design and development of Collarosta Technologies and Crafts will not be forgotten.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step

Although the social enterprise is still young, I believe it will paint the picture perfectly transforming the arts and crafts industry.
