Milestones of Romney’s 100 years history/ Evelyn

George Romney is one of the oldest Kendal Mint Cake brands. Its reputation is spreading all over the world. However, not many people know that this famous company still keeps its three-rooms size factory to create its products to the whole world including Germany, France and America.
As the 100th anniversaries of Romney’s approaches, Paula Barron, the director of Romney’s, sharing their celebrate plan this year. What’s more, we were invited to its mysterious factory to find out how the world famous Kendal Mint Cake is done!

The factory is hidden in the quiet and beautiful town of Kendal in Cumbria. Taking about 20 minutes walk, you will find this little sign among a group of big warehouses. The strong minty smell will quickly lead you to the right direction to the factory!

Though Kendal Mint Cake has the word ‘cake,’ it doesn’t have flour, egg or milk. The word ‘cake’ is just an old way in England to describe the sweet which squashed things together — so is the 100 years old Romney’s Kendal Mint Cake. It is made up from four simple ingredients: sugar, glucose, water and peppermint oil.
According to its website, the workers will mix sugar, glucose, and water in a giant pot and boil it to a very high temperature. After this they pour the mixture out evenly into the copper pans, and they add the peppermint oil and let the “graining” process begin. This is one secret of their family recipe to make sure that the mixture sets the proper hard perfectly.

“Keep it traditional,” says Paula. She and her husband, John Barron, are the fourth generation of the family running this business. They believe that the secret of being successful for so long is very simple.
The high temperature and strong minty smell in the factory is not a comfortable environment to work, but you can stay here if you have the passion for doing this.
“When we go out, and people always said that we smell minty, just like Kendal Mint Cake,” Paula added, “but we can’t even notice.”
“People like us because our product, our Kendal Mint Cake,” when talking about the future, Paula stressed, “not because the fancy package or the promotion, we have kept it for a hundred years, and we will keep doing it in exactly the same way and same ingredients.”

White Kendal Mint Cake is the most tradition and classic one among all those flavors. Be careful when you first bite of it, the strong minty wave might hit you from the mouth to the nose!

The Brown one is the most famous one, which Sir Edmund Hillary and Sirdar Tenzing carried it on the first successful summit of Mount Everest in 1953. The unique combination of sugar and mint can support them effectively to do any outdoor activity. It tastes smoother than the white one.

If you don’t like the strong mint taste and hate the simple sugar flavor, you have the try this one. This one is probably most acceptable to the public; the chocolate covered has done well of neutralising the strong peppermint and sugar.

The orange packaging probably related you to an orange or lemon flavor, but watch out when you decide to taste it. This one is an aniseed-flavoured candy bar — YES — ANISEED FLAVOUR. I highly suspect that whether people will like it, especially when you open the package and smell it. Smells like hell, that’s how I will describe it. I needed the courage to have a try, and it tastes really complicated. But if you’re crazy about strange food, go and have a try. Maybe you will like it.
