Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes (Author), Tobias Smollett (Translator).
Hailed by Dostoyevsky as “The final and greatest utterance of the human mind,” Don Quixote is a founding work of modern Western literature. First published in two volumes in Spain in 1605 and 1615, Cervantes’ novel is an account of the adventures of Don Quixote, the persona of a reader of medieval romances who fancies himself a chivalrous knight, and his squire Sancho Panza, a farmer whose down-to-earth comments serve to puncture the fanciful rhetoric of his delusional companion.
Don Quixote has appeared on lists of the world’s best novels, including the Bokklubben World Library, which calls Cervantes’ masterpiece the ‘best literary work ever written.” The Dover Thrift Edition is based on Tobias Smollett’s 1755 English translation, which includes Smollett’s “Life of Cervantes,” “Translator’s Note” and “Preface to the Reader.”

The Marquis de Sade (1740–1814) was a French nobleman, politician, philosopher and writer, whose writings about controversial topics such as sexual acts of cruelty and hedonism led to his imprisonment, first in the Bastille and later in other prisons and institutions, such as the Charenton Asylum for the Insane. During his incarceration, de Sade continued to write works such as his magnum opus The 120 Days of Sodom, which was composed in part in the Bastille, between 1784 and 1789. During his imprisonment at the Charenton Asylum, from 1803 until his death, de Sade wrote and composed dramatic plays, some of which were enacted by his fellow inmates for audiences of Parisian citizens.
The Dover edition is a comprehensive anthology of de Sade’s writings, including excerpts from Justine, The 120 Days of Sodom, Philosophy in the Bedroom, and other works. The translator Margaret Crosland provides context for de Sade’s strident moral relativism and explicit erotica.
